Artist Picture

Bio

Sonia Payes is a conceptually-based artist working with photography, multi-media, animation and sculpture - a strong environmental narrative permeates Payes’ works and the cycle of re-creation is explored in her wildly dystopian landscapes. A veil of memory and awareness filters Payes’ works, her images exploring the cycle of transformation form birth to regeneration, charting humanity’s capacity to continually adjust to changes in the earth’s mutable environment.

Payes gained attention with her early portraiture, creating images that both captured and defined her subjects with her photographic essays on 60 Australian artists in UNTITLED. Portraits of Australian Artists published by Macmillan Art Publishing, introduction by Professor Ted Snell, in 2007. Since then she has exhibited both nationally and internationally, galleries include: McClelland Sculpture Park + Gallery, Melbourne; Olympia Exhibition Centre, London; Willow Studios, Los Angeles; BOMA Shipping Container Gallery, Queensland; Queensland Centre for Photography, Brisbane; Centre for Contemporary Photography, Melbourne; Queens Wharf, Auckland; Glen Eira City Council Gallery, Melbourne; Cube 37, Melbourne; ACAF, Hong Kong; Shangahi Urban Planning Exhibition Centre, Shanghai; John Curtin Access Gallery, Perth.

In 2012 Payes underwent a two-month art residency at the studio of Shen Shaomin, in the rural area of Qiao Zi Art Commune, in rural Beijing. She won the 2014 McClelland Achievement Prize for her monumental sculptural installation, which was later purchased for public art in the City of Melville through Sculpture By The Sea in Cottesloe Perth. Inclusive in this win was her three-month solo exhibition at McClelland Gallery+ Sculpture Park, Parallel Futures . In 2017 Payes’s artist monograph, Transformations: The Art of Sonia Payes, by Ashley Crawford was launched.

In 2017, Payes presented two solo exhibitions simultaneously; at Scott Livesey Galleries, Melbourne Emergence, uniting her diverse practice in photography and sculpture and a photography exhibition at the Monash Gallery of Art, Wheelers Hill, Victoria; Artists in PNG Australia, Terra Mysteria. Payes was also included in Sculpture by the Sea: Bondi, both for outside and inside sculptures, and was a guest artist for White Night, Melbourne 2018. Later that year Payes works featured in several public exhibitions in Regional NSW, both at Hillview and Mudgee and many of her larger works have found permanent homes in private sculpture parks.

2019 began with Payes exhibiting her first large sculptural works in bronze at Sculpture by the Sea in Cottesloe, Perth.

Payes’ work is represented in numerous public galleries in Australia and prestigious private collections in Australia, Shanghai, Beijing, Switzerland and Belgium.

Transient Information

lenticular print

89.00 x 120.00 cm

In the lenticular print Transient Information, past, present and future are united through the shifting expression of one of Africa’s Maasai population. Emerging from darkness, the piercing white eyes of this scarred but proud figure gaze at us from a place of knowing. As the viewer moves back and forth, a communicative channel between temporalities opens up – a sleek-faced, curious future-self observing their past incarnation – before the indominable warrior’s mortal eyes flash shut. Given that past informs future, and death engenders new life, as the viewer’s perspective changes those eyes flicker between states: resulting in a visually striking illustration of life’s eternal, regenerative cycles. . . . . . . . This work has many images which you’ll see in the lenticular print. This is one of the images.

This work invites the viewer to explore an internal self-reflection, extending themes of regeneration in an Anthropocene world where humanity has become the dominant influence on climate and the environment. . . . . . . . . ‘Woman in Bronze (2019) is the latest piece from Melbourne based artist Sonia Payes: exploring thematic preoccupations of creation, destruction, and transformation, but through a contemporary lens of growing environmental angst.’ ‘Hybridity is an integral part of her artistic practice, and over a sixteen-year professional career she has combined her foundational photographic work with digital imagery, 3D technologies, animated film and sculpture.’ ‘ Woman in Bronze, a distillation of humanity, Earth, and personified creation, impotently anticipates its own dissolution. But Payes remains hopeful. The sneaking crack that threatens to tear these conjoined unities apart, to divide one into two, also presents a reproductive multiplication. Bearing the visual DNA of the artist’s family – her daughters Ilana and Janine, and their own children – it conveys a fervent belief in life’s potential for regeneration.’   These lines are taken from an essay that is being published internationally soon, by Daniel Pateman, Freelance Arts Writer, U.K. 2019
